The Social Boffin Report: Finding Focus

Four 4 months in & the learning never ends.

Don’t get me wrong, I love to learn. It’s actually one of my top strengths. I just didn’t quite know what I was letting myself in for all those months ago, when I decided to take the plunge into the business world.

In all honesty before I left my previous employment, I was aware of a few things which came with going solo in business including the fact that when you become a business owner you end up doing the thing you are amazing at for only a bit of your time, especially in the beginning.

Roughly 40% of my time would be working on Social Media Marketing for others & the rest on growing my business, networking & admin tasks. Many entrepreneurs find this revelation more than a bit startling.

Interestingly however, as a marketer I get to spend more of my time doing the thing I’m good at because I have to do it for my own business. The things I love to do such as social media strategy, creating content, networking & general marketing stuff all comes under both sides of this coin for me. Yay!

The biggest thing which has taken me by surprise is the fact about how much I don’t know about running a business for example ‘sales’. There is a lot of pushing a rock up a hill involved in tasks like these, one where you can’t see where the top is & you’re also not quite sure it’s the right hill but you keep pushing it up anyway.

I’ve been asked so many times over the past 4 months about how things are going & I have genuinely started to answer using this analogy. There’s no better way of explaining it to them or to myself. I know what I’m doing is right & my rock is getting further up the hill all the time.

Maybe that’s what being in business is all about? Decide on what you want to do & start pushing. And don’t stop!

You really don’t know what’s over the next bump. Your success could be a little further up & if you stop pushing you will never see it.

It takes focus to push the rock up the hill. The hill is steep & therefore takes a lot of effort to push this one rock up. If you start pushing other rocks up the hill, it’s okay to begin with, almost easy.

However, as soon as you’re a little way up the rocks start to become heavy & unbalanced. You will start to find it hard to focus, constantly switching your focus from one to the other. Soon you’ll find you’re not moving at all & spending your time balancing them. Making sure neither rocks falls, getting you nowhere & keeping you from the success you deserve.

You need to keep your focus on the one rock (thing) you need, to move your business forward towards your goal.

Focusing on your ‘The One Thing’ is a hard thing to do. I can attest to that. Many a stressful moment & panic about whether I’m focusing in on the right thing. However, the results you will start to see will be incredible.

Find the thing which is going to make your business soar & focus in on it. There is a lot of content written about why this is most successful way to grow a business, but if you boil it down to logic, it just make sense. Doesn’t it?

I’m ready to push my rock all the way to the top of the hill. I want to see the amazing view!

My current rock is my new ‘Tea & Boffin’ service, which is a 60 minute 1-2-1 social media chat over a cup of tea. Get in touch emily@thesocialboffin.co.uk or ring me on 07951 658 908 to learn more about what this can do for your social media focus & success!

Also suggest you read ‘The One Thing’ book – it explains a lot more about figuring out what your one thing & why to focus in on it.

The Social Boffin Report: Tackling Your Fears with Confidence

My third month as a startup has just begun, & I am yet to sell my very first product. This is a scary fact to admit, especially with my personal network asking questions about ‘how it’s going?’ & ‘Sold anything yet?’. I know they are asking out of love, so my fear reaction must be coming from within me & to be fair it’s not surprising. This is one scary ride.

The fear can be overwhelming at times & it can make moving forward the hardest action in the world. Often I try to remind myself this is what I signed up for & it’s kind of what it’s all about? Starting a business is about being brave & finding the confidence in yourself to know what you give to the world is something they really need.

the-fear-hold

Confidence in myself I would say has become my first hurdle to master in starting my own business & I also see it in my fellow startup owners. That’s not to say you shouldn’t be reaching out to your network to help boost your confidence levels when their running low but I also believe you must in your very heart be confident in yourself as a person, otherwise the fear will hold you frozen.

At a networking event this week, the phrase ‘If you want the best personal development seminar on the planet start your own business’ was aired to the room. This absolutely resonated with me & my startup journey so far. I’ve realised only once we are confident with who with we are & what we can offer to the world, can we start to think about how we can do that through our business.

Thankfully (due to many phone calls with my support network) I’m starting to feel the confidence in myself come to the surface, to a place where I can access it more easily in my day to day dealings. Helping me to deal with the doubts & fears I’m coming across each day & being able to handle them, so less time in spent in the fear freezing zone.

who-you-are

In all honesty, I know I’m on the precipice on something great. I believe I have so much to give to the world & my journey has only just begun. So from one human being to another, wherever you may be on your journey I want you to take a bit of time to focus on your confidence.

Knowing who you are, will help you figure out who you want to help & from there you can start to dream big about how to do just that.

Good Luck – The Social Boffin
